- Hans van Briemen of Mobile Excellence B.V. is the copyright owner and creative mind behind Sudoku-Ball. He is a very creative mathematician and Marketing professor at the University of Applied Science in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Marcel Lennartz of Lensoft International Ltd is the project director/producer of Sudoku-Ball and makes Hans's ideas into reality.
DownloadJava3d recently chatted with Marcel, and we learned about their game, the development process, and the development team behind Sudoku-Ball.
Our interview with Marcel Lennartz continues here...

- Development Platform
- dlj3d: What OS(es) do you develop on?
- Marcel: We developed on Microsoft Windows and target the application for Linux, Unix, Mac, Solaris and Windows.
- dlj3d: What IDEs do you use?
- Marcel: Eclipse and Borland JBuilder.
- dlj3d: What version of Java and Java3D?
- Marcel: Java 1.4.2 and Java3D 1.4.0 for development so that the applet will work with these versions or higher.
- dlj3d: What design tools did you use?
- Marcel: 3DS Max is used for rendering the initial prototypes of the ball and to produce the textures for the applet. Adobe Photoshop was used to create the User Interface of the applet.
- dlj3d: Did you develop any in-house tools to help you create the game?
- Marcel: We developed one in-house tool which is used to help us understand how numbers are placed on the texture and what the effect is on quality when altering the alpha, beta and gamma.
- Java3D
- dlj3d: Why did you choose Java3D?
- Marcel: We decided to use to Java3D because of
- Portability and support for multiple platforms.
- Provision of a high-level (over OpenGL or DirectX), object-oriented view of 3D graphics.
- A large and growing number of 3D loaders are available to import content into the Java 3D runtime.
- Easy to share knowledge and get some supports because there are a huge number of Java 3D developers when compared to other 3D SDKs such as JOGL, Xith3D , jME (Java Monkey Engine), etc...
- dlj3d: What would you like to see in future versions of Java3D?
- Marcel: There is a lack of documentation, performance should be improved and the current limitation for the size of texture should be increased allowing for better quality display. Several users are struggling with the installation of Java3D. We had some users which had a broken Java3D installation and only full removal of the old version would resolve the problem.
